10 Cities in California with the Best Weather

The Golden State offers all four seasons, making it an ideal year-round destination. Residents and visitors bask under the summer sun and play in the 450 inches of average snowfall per year. Ten California cities, however, offer both residents and tourists optimum weather conditions.

Warm-weather activities are plentiful during California’s muggy summers. The entire month of June is perfect for lounging at the beaches or heading to the skate park for skateboarding. The cold of the December and January months offers the ideal conditions for snowboarding and skiing.

It is not unusual for visitors to spend the morning surfing on the ocean and later take a flight to the Snow Summit for an afternoon of skiing. The diverse climatic conditions in the Golden State make it easy to enjoy recreational summer and snow activities in the same day.

1. San Diego

Although the entire state of California has 300 sunny days a year, San Diego is one destination visitors will not want to pass up. The average temperature is 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Warm days are abundant in San Diego, which is why it takes the number one spot on this list.

Even during the hottest months, San Diego’s high temperatures reach a comfortable 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures hover around a cool 66 degrees during the coldest months. Extreme temperature fluctuations are minimal here, making it a great place to visit year-round.

2. San Francisco

The Bay Area in the north features mild weather. San Francisco rarely sees extremely hot days. While the rest of the country experiences the start of a cool autumn, September and October in San Francisco are the warmest and sunniest months, and when it experiences its Indian Summer.

3. Sacramento

Sacramento’s Mediterranean climate offers mild winters and warm summers. The weather here is consistent, with temperatures averaging 61 degrees Fahrenheit. Visitors and residents alike can plan the day’s activities without fear of being caught off guard by unpredictable weather conditions.

5. Santa Monica

Like much of the Golden State, Santa Monica, a beachfront city in western Los Angeles County, boasts of temperate weather conditions. The summer skies are clear, while the winters are normally partly cloudy. Average temperatures vary from 49 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

6. El Dorado Hills

7. Laguna Hills

Snow does not fall in Laguna Hills. Instead, this Orange County city has 281 sunny days a year. Summer temps average 83 degrees Fahrenheit. January is the city’s coldest month, at a cool but comfortable 46 degrees Fahrenheit. Laguna Hills boasts a Sperling’s comfort index of 81 out of 100.

8. Irvine

Irvine’s comfort index reaches an impressive score of 9.3 out of 10, making this city one of the most pleasant places to live. Expect June, July, and October to deliver balmy temperatures of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. December and January are the least comfortable months at 46 degrees Fahrenheit.

9. Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa, just north of San Francisco, is wine country, featuring long and warm summers that can peak at 91 degrees Fahrenheit. The ocean breeze cools the balmy air in the afternoons and evenings, while fog frequently develops during the mornings and nights.

10. Fremont

Another Bay Area city to make this list is Fremont, with 260 sunny days per year. At 16 inches of rain annually, Fremont gets less than half the rain than the rest of the country. Instead of snow, which does not fall here, Fremont receives rainfall in the winter.

Given its diverse weather conditions, California offers its visitors and residents ample opportunities for cold weather and warm weather activities. The snow trails are ideal for extreme sports, like fat-tire biking, while the beach culture encourages lazy days under the California sun.

Californians know they can lather on the sunscreen and ski in a t-shirt instead of wearing multiple layers. Clearly, it’s safe to plan recreational activities during any season in the Golden State, whether heading up north to the Bay Area cities or down south to sunny San Diego.
